Manchester United on Saturday stunned rivals Manchester City 2-1 to lift their 13th FA Cup at Wembley Stadium.

The thrilling encounter went into the breather with Man United leading 2-0 courtesy of strikes by Alejandro Garnacho at the 30-minute mark and another by Kobbie Mainoo nine minutes later through a Bruno Fernandes assist.

The Premier League champions pulled one back in the 87th minute through Jeremy Doku following a Phil Foden assist but it was too little too late to deny the Erik ten Hag squad a deserved moment of glory.

The celebrations reverberated beyond the Wembley stadium with the likes of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi congratulating the Red Devils for work well done.

"The Red Devils reign supreme! Manchester United conquer City in a thrilling FA Cup final. Glory, glory, Man United," the Prime CS said on X.

Manchester United have now taken their FA trophy tally to 13 having first lifted the silverware in 1909.

They followed it up with a series of other conquests in 1948, 1963, 1977, 1983, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1996, 1999, 2004, 2016 and now 2024.

Speaking to BBC during the post-match interview, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes said they gave their all as it was their only chance to get something positive from the season.

"We were here last season and we weren't good enough and we had to see them go up and get the trophy," he said.

"It is crucial for everyone. We know the manager is under so much scrutiny, he deserves this, also everyone in the backroom staff and the players, we all deserve this."

The skipper was full of praise for Mainoo who he said has grown to be such a quality player from his Academy days to one who makes a mark where it matters most.

"Congratulations to everyone, the staff, the players and all the fans, they have given us a big push - finally we have something to celebrate," Bruno said.

Ten Hag said the team has grown to something better since he took over but they are not where they want to be even as he said he was very proud of the players and staff.

"Football is about winning trophies. I want to play the best football, dynamic, attacking football but in the end you have to win games and trophies. That’s the mentality we brought in. This was our one opportunity and we did it," he said.

His opposite Pep Guardiola said he doesn't believe Manchester United whom he descriobed as "a transition team" were the better side but congratulated them nonetheless for the win.

"It was a tight game. We lost the game. Congratulations to United...First half we struggled a bit but second half we were better. In general it as a good performance for a final."
