KBF league to take Christmas, New Year break after this weekend

Kenya National Basketball League will take a break after this weekend’s fixtures, the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) announced yesterday.

While releasing this week’s last fixtures of the year, the KBF competitions secretary, Joseph Amoko, wished the teams a Merry Christmas and said the games will resume on January 27.

Nairobi City Thunder continued their push for their first national title after they completed their fixtures with an unbeaten run after beating Ulinzi Warriors 66-42 at Nyayo Stadium gymnasium on Tuesday.

The winners, who have now finished their first leg fixtures and have garnered a maximum of 22 points from 11 matches, took a commanding 19-5 advantage in the opening quarter.

Griffin Ligare hit the opener from a three-pointer, and they dropped four treys in a row with Faheem Juma banking three of those as they took a commanding 19-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The soldiers produced a much solid performance in the next three quarters of the game but despite that effort, they still trailed throughout the proceedings. They are second on the table with 17 points from 10 games.

Completing the third spot are Equity Bank Dumas who bagged 15 points from nine games. Reigning champions, Kenya Ports Authority are sixth with 13 points from six wins out of seven ties.

Thunder went up 16-12 in the second quarter as they took a solid 35-17 lead into the break. After intermission, the soldiers tried all their arsenals to turn the tables in vain as they were down 18-14 and 13-11 in the last two quarters respectively.

Garang Diing posted 14 points, Faheem Juma shot 13 and Ariel Okal added 11 for Thunder. None of the Warriors posted double-figure scores as Churchill Odhiambo, Brans Nzioka, and John Washika combined for their team’s 25 points.
