Okoth quit in a huff after the team was humiliated 4-0 by Ulinzi Stars at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday.
Shabana Secretary General, Elizaphan Kerama, said former Gor Mahia defender Kambona who was one of Okoth’s assistants, will take over until a new coach is named. Kambona will be assisted by Kevin Momanyi.
“Kambona will lead the team against Gor Mahia on Wednesday and Bandari on Sunday as we look for a new coach. We hope to find one by the time we host Nzoia Sugar on November 11,” Kerama said on Monday.
On the resignation of Okoth, the Kerama said: “Even though I have not received his resignation letter, I respect his decision and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
He said already, more than 10 coaches have applied for the now vacant position.
“I have so far received more than 10 applications from coaches. The management will sit down and look at the CVs before making a decision. We are looking for a coach with KPL experience and track record. We don’t want to make mistakes,” noted Kerama.
He added: “The recruitment process will be meticulous and professional.”
Immediate former Kenya Police coach Francis Baraza is among the big shots who are being considered alongside current assistant coach Salim Babu and Tuskers Robert Matano. Others are Sammy Pamzo Omollo and Zedekiah Zico Otieno.
Kerama did not reveal the names of the applicants. “Some of the coaches who have applied are attached to clubs so I don’t want to reaveal the names now,” he said.
He said they intend to overhaul the technical bench and hinted at having Bunyore Starlets' coach Timothy Ondeko as an assistant coach.
Okoth is the fifth coach to part ways with his club so far this season. Others are Twahir Muhiddin (Bandari), Francis Haringingo (Sofapaka), Francis Baraza (Kenya Police) and Tom Juma (AFC Leopards).
Okoth leaves Shabana at position 16 with just seven points from eight games. He managed one win, four draws and three losses
