The Kenya Soccer Players Association (KSPA) have submitted a petition to the Ministry of Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, calling to action the status of Kenyan football.

The petition was submitted to the ministry's offices at the Talanta Plaza in Upper Hill, Nairobi.

The petition serves as a call to the ministry's intervention in line with adherence to judicial pronouncements so as to safeguard football players and the game.

Speaking during a press briefing, KSPA secretary general, Harold Ndege, said the current FKF structure is illegal and appealed to the CS for a fresh election.

"We call for an election through an intervention by the ministry. We are aware that the current FKF structure is illegal and we, therefore, call for an election through an intervention by the CS. We are looking at February 10 as the possible date," he said.

Ndege additionally said the ministry should form a general assembly, in conjunction with Fifa and all stakeholders, whose main agenda should be to conduct fresh and fair elections.

The petition by the association highlights a report by the Ministry of Sports formed committee dated November 5, 2021.

The report titled 'Preliminary Report of the FKF Inspection Committee' revealed serious violations of the Sports Act and misappropriation of funds by the federation.

The association also raised issues in the unconstitutional manner in which the National Executive Committee was forced out of office by FKF.

The way the resumption of office was done,  portrayed a federation that has no respect for the rule of law having been disbanded through a legal process sanctioned under the Sports Act petition read in part.

The Secretary-General further added that football is a high-paying sport and the government should invest in talented footballers.

"Kenyan football can contribute approximately Sh600 billion annually to the exchequer. So we want to commercialize the sports sector so that everybody can have a fair share of the game," Ndege concluded.

Legendary Kenyan footballer Shaban Omar on the other hand,  lamented how the government has left them in the cold.

"Those of us who played back in the 80s and 90s don't get consulted on matters football. The standard of football has also gone down, a factor attributed to low fan turnout," the former Harambee Stars goalkeeper said.
