The women's Premier League 2022-23 season is taking shape with two teams firmly in the race to win the prestigious title after three-quarters of the season has already been played.

Gaspo Women top the standings by virtue of a superior goal difference against second-placed Vihiga Queens after accumulating 34 points. Nakuru City Queens and Thika Queens are third and fourth with 28 and 26 points respectively.

It is the first time in more than six years the local scene is witnessing such cut-throat competition in WPL that continues to grow from strength to strength.

Former Thika Queens coach Joseph Oyoo thinks Gaspo are well placed to bag the coveted accolade based on their consistency but he did not rule out Vihiga.

"Gaspo are primed for the title because they are the most consistent team this season. They have a clear playing structure, have quality players notwithstanding their bench power," Oyoo said.

"Vihiga have the required experience being the dominant team in the last five seasons. They started poorly but  a string of good performances has brought them back into the picture."

On his part, former Kayole Starlets coach Joshua Sakwa reckons it is hard to separate Vihiga and Gaspo at the moment but matches against Thika will decide the winner.

"Both Gaspo and Vihiga are yet to play Thika and Nakuru as well as play against each other. Whoever wins the three matches will obviously be crowned champion. Gaspo have taken their game to another level but the race will go down to the wire."

Alex Alumira, the former title-winning tactician with Vihiga Queens thinks differently.

"It is a close call and it is too early to many any conclusions. It's all about mental strength, the quality of players and their experience. This should be coupled with the head-to-head performances amongst the title contenders.

"At the end of the day, it will be the team that makes the least of mistakes and makes the most of the opponent's shortcomings."

Alumira is the head coach of the Fountain Gates women's team that plies trade in the Tanzania Serengeti Lite Women's Premier League. He won three titles in a row with Vihiga prior to his acrimonious departure in 2021.
