Six-time national hammer throw champion Dominic Abunda, 30, hopes to strike a gold medal at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.

Abunda, a two-time African Games finalist, hopes to use the event as a gate pass to the 2024 Paris Olympics in Agust.

“I look forward to clinching gold, if not, qualify for the Olympics," said Abunda.

Abunda, who has a personal best of 62.57 from 2018, is wary of South African Allan Cumming, who has a personal best of 73m from 2021.

He believes an encounter with Cumming is the perfect way to test himself as he targets 70m.

"I want to use the African games to qualify for the Olympics. I look forward to hitting 70m," he said.

"I am better prepared and have applied the lessons acquired last year. It's a pleasure competing against the best again. I know they'll push me to the limit."

He recently finished top in the second and third AK Track and field weekend meetings in 56.96m and 59.63m at Ulinzi and Kasarani stadiums on January 6 and 26 respectively.

He threw 57.65m during the African Games trials at Nyayo Stadium.
