Over 500 elite athletes are expected at the ninth edition of the annual Chemususu Half Marathon set for November 11 in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County.

Race director Mathew Birir said this year’s edition has attracted top corporates and athletes — who will be involved in various activities before the race.

“We are anticipating a big number of athletes — between 500 and 1,000 — since this is the best half marathon race so far in the country,” said Birir, a former Olympic Games 3,000m steeplechase champion.

He said besides running, key among their objectives is the conservation of Chemususu Dam, a key water catchment facility in the region.

"We will have activities like educating locals on agribusiness,  free medical camp, and distribution of sanitary towels,” he said.

Birir, who also won the world junior 3,000m steeplechase title, said they have handed wild cards to defending champions Emmanuel Kemboi and Daisy Cherotich in a bid to enable them to defend their titles.

“This is a great offer for us as race organisers, to honour the champions with free registration. This is to motivate not only them but future champions too,” said Birir.

Meanwhile, Birir said despite the entry and goodwill from their sponsors, they will not increase the prize money.

“Both the men's and women's winners will pocket Sh250,000 with the second and third finishers pocketing Sh150,000 and Sh100,000 respectively. This will trickle down to the 10th finishers, who will take home Sh10,000," added Birir.
