Brimin Misoi successfully defended his Frankfurt marathon title on Sunday held in Mainova, Germany.

The two-time Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon winner clocked 2:04:53 to smash his previous best by at least two minutes.

Misoi had won last year’s event in 2:06:11.

Ethiopian duo Asefa Mulugeta Uma (2:06:47) and Guye Adola (2:07:44) finished second and third respectively after failing to trouble the Kenyan.

Adola, the 2021 Berlin Marathon champion tried to keep pace with Misoi in the course of the race but ran out of gas in the closing stages as Misoi stepped up to win the event and bag Sh2.8m.

Kenyan athletes occupied position four to eight with Albert Kangongo posting in 2:08:10, followed by Dominic Letting in 2:08:23, Isaac Lelei in 2:09:32, Fredrick Kibii in 2:09:33, and Edwin Kipruto in 2:12:16.

The win wiped off a disappointing year for Misoi, who had finished 13th in the Tokyo Marathon early this year where he clocked 2:07: 36.

“It's been a tough year on the roads but I came here with a mission to defend the title I won last year and am delighted,” added Misoi

Misoi, who trains in Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet county said the conditions were tricky but he adapted well to them.

“In the course of the race, there was a bit of rain but I coped well as well the threat posed by the Ethiopians, especially Adola. I knew when to increase the pace," he said.

Ethiopia's Buzunesh Getachew won the women's race in 2:19:27 followed by eight Kenyans, led by Winfidah Moseti in 2:20:55.
