Chebet beats quality field to win women's 5,000m at Kip Keino classic

Two months after winning the world cross country title in Bathurst, Australia, Beatrice Chebet beat a quality field to triumph in 5,000m at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi.

Chebet, the former world cross country junior champion, reigned supreme in the women’s title in 15:15.82.

She beat Margaret Kipkemboi Chelimo to second in 15:16.28 with Judith Kiyeng, the young sister to former world 3,000m steeplechase champion Hyvine Kiyeng settling for third position.

Returning into action after serving a ban for doping, Lilian Kasait finished fourth.

Chebet said: "It was my first race this season and I'm longing for a better year because I was here to test my speed and endurance. My season will even get better with many races lined up".

Ethiopia's Lemi Teddese won the men’s 5,000m title.

He clocked 13:2658 to beat Kenya's Ishmail Rokitto to second in 13:27.34 while Peter Maru from Uganda completed the podium at 13:28.14.

In 400m men, Zambian Muzala Samukonga was victorious, beating American Vernon Norwood and French international Gilles Biron.

Kenyan Boniface Mweresa finished fourth in a season-best of 45.73.

Samukonga set a new meeting record of 44.25.
