Elgeyo Marakwet to host its debut inaugural marathon

Kabila said that the winners in the male and female categories will be awarded Sh 1million each.

All eyes shifted to Elgeyo Marakwet as the country hosts its Inaugural marathon on December 18 at the Iten grounds.

Organizing Committee chairman Jackson Kabila said they are determined to position Iten as the world’s greatest training destination considering the location has produced elite athletes over the years.

 

“We are happy to introduce a marathon in Iten. This is the only region in the country with the highest number of athletes and we feel like this will boost the identity of Iten to international levels,” said Kabila.

Elgeyo Marakwet is known for its glory in producing elite athletes including former world champions and Olympians Wilson Kipsang, Abel Kirui, David Rudisha, Florence Kiplagat, Edna Kiplagat, Mary Keitany and Asbel Kiprop among others.

In 2019, Iten grounds was recognised by World Athletics as the World Athletic landmark.

Kabila said that the winners in the male and female categories will be awarded Sh1 million each.

“We will reward the top 20 athletes in each category. The prize money is Sh1 million for the winners while other runners will be awarded as per their performance,” he said, adding that they are almost done with their preparations.

Kabila said they expect athletes across borders in the race that is being In supported by Kenya Commercial Bank and Elgeyo Marakwet county government.

Kabila said he is thrilled the county government has decided to act and make the race a reality.

“I really appreciate Governor Wisley Rotich for implementing this idea. This is a great opportunity for Iten to reawaken the county,” said Kabila.   

He further noted that budding athletes will be inspired by the event as well as get exposure.
