Vihiga County has cited a lack of finances as the impediment hindering them from constructing state-of-the-art sports facilities.

The county's sports chief officer, Sylvester Kane, said this while reacting to concerns by fans over poor facilities in the county.

A section of the fans were quoted as saying it was embarrassing to have six teams in various leagues yet there is nothing to show in terms of facilities.

"Most of our teams are struggling financially and we shouldn't overburden them with more costs of travelling and hiring playgrounds when we can have our own," said Harrison Ambuka, one of the fans.

Kane said: “We have no land here in Vihiga County to set up stadiums.  For us to expand Kidundu Stadium in Hamisi and Mumboha grounds, we need money to relocate people and create space,” Kane noted.

In Mumboha,  he said they need to engage the local community with a view of moving them to create space. "It is the same scenario in Hamisi, where we equally need cash to buy land somewhere and relocate those immediate residents,” he added.

He said what they are currently doing is to upgrade Mumboha and Hamisi in order to save the teams from incurring huge costs of hiring playgrounds from the neighbouring counties of Kisumu and Kakamega.

The county that has six teams in the National League has only one playing ground which is yet to meet the Fifa requirements.

Mulembe FC and Vihiga Bullets FC share Mumias Complex that is in Kakamega County.

Vihiga Queens who are in Kenya Women's Premier League (KWPL) shifted the matches to Moi Stadium in Kisumu to avoid fixture clash with their male counterparts.

Luanda Villa FC, Bunyore Starlets and Soccer Assassins share Mumboha grounds in Luanda sub-county. Last Saturday, Soccer Assassins had to reschedule their match to evade fixture clash on the pitch.
