Kenya Aquatics to send Masters team to global show in Doha

The masters' category is for swimmers aged over 25 years and Kaberu said there is enough depth in that age group.

Kenya is keen to send the Masters team to the World Swimming Championships in February next year in Doha, Qatar.

Speaking over the weekend following a successful Kiambu Masters Swimming Championship at Porterhouse, Runda, Kenya Aquatics Vice President Stanley Kaberu said they were exploring ways of sending a team to the event.

"From the talent on the show, I believe we are going to send a team that can compete with the world's best at the global show," added Kaberu. 

The masters' category is for swimmers aged over 25 years and Kaberu said there is enough depth in that age group.

“We have a good crop of swimmers in the category and we can train well and get funding, I am sure we can send a very strong team to the global show next year," added Kaberu.

]A total of 35 swimming clubs and over 150 swimmers nationwide graced the event. Among the prominent clubs present were — Nextgen Multi Sports, Genesis, Peponi School, Parklands Sports Club, USIU Dolphins, Touride Adventures, Seahorses Aquatics, Home Aquatics, Tipwa Tipwa, Olive Fin, Braeburn, Porterhouse School and Premier. 

Kenya Aquatics Secretary General Collins Marigiri said the burgeoning interest in the event underscored the growing momentum of Masters Swimming.

"This burgeoning interest is propelling older swimmers towards aspirations of participation in global championships, including the World Swimming Masters Championship and continental events," he said.

He added the next event for the masters will be the national gala slated for March next year. He noted that they will soon establish a database for the Masters category in the country.
