Champions Nairobi Water Queens clobbered the National Cereals and Produce Board 30-27 to sound a warning ahead of the East and Central Africa Handball Championships which start on December 2 in Nairobi.

The Kenya Handball Federation now league takes a break until next year and Queens' coach Jack Ochieng said it was important to end their fixtures for the year, especially against a top team.

"A win is a win and I am happy with this one. Cereals is a top team and I expected much resistance. However, we will have to work on our defence before the regional championships," said Ochieng.

The winners led 14-11 at halftime but the Millers did well to cut it to 18-17. Despite a late strong push, NCPB were unable to turn the tables. 

Cecilia Katheu scored seven goals while Melvin Akinyi and Gladys Chilo shot six each for the winners. Berlin Achieng had seven while Sarah Mabonga and Naomy Muyoka netted six each for NCPB.

"It was a good weekend, where won our two games. This shows that we are progressing well," said Queens' coach Vitalice Mutula.

Jkuat top goal-getters were Magdalene Mumo and Esther Gathoni, who bagged four a-piece.

Jkuat had seven goals from Shadrack Omondi and six from Stanley Kulecho as they dismissed Desert Scorpions 31-24.

Stephen Wanyama led the losers, down 13-10 at half time, with 10 goals while Robin Mosoni scored another seven.

Technical University of Kenya (TUK) blanked Young City 37-23 as Michael Okello and Julia Nganga managed eight and six goals respectively.

Leading the Young City assault were Felix Otieno, Joel Musa and Moses Okoth, who scored four goals each.

National Youth Service (NYS) beat New Hope 32-22 as Serfine Akoth hit 14 goals and Irene Gatwiri six. Florence Sanyisa had nine and Timminah Barasa had eight for Hope.

The Ruaraka-based NYS were also stunned 22-21 by Mountain Queens, who had six goals from Zipporah Wairimu and five from Joyce Njeri. 

NYS men lost 33-30 to Deseret Scorpions as Martin Odera bagged nine goals and Steve Manyara seven. For NYS, Phares Muyondi had eight, and Sammy Amani had six.
