Nigerian stars to bolster KPA in Africa club tourney in Maputo

The porters' coach Anthony Ojukwu revealed that besides the two foreigners, US-based player Brenda Wasuda is also available for the continental show.

Nigerian star players Theresa Dangosu and Ifunaya Okoro have joined Kenya Ports Authority ahead of FIBA Africa Women's  Club Championship starting Friday in Maputo, Mozambique.

KPA coach Anthony Ojukwu revealed that besides the two foreigners, United States-based player Brenda Wasuda is also available for the continental show.

 Wasuda, a national forward was one of the foreign-based players who played for the team during the Zone Five qualifiers in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania last year.

Missing out are three key diaspora players Victoria Reynolds, Brittany Nicole and Kristina Kings who lined up for KPA in Dar.

“Reynolds is unavailable since she is engaged with her team in Spain. Nicole and Kings are also unavailable due to club commitments in Puerto Rico,” Ojukwu maintained. 

The porters booked their tickets to the tournament during a FIBA Africa Zone Five show in Dar last month losing 78-67 to Alexandria Sporting Club of Egypt. 

“We have trained well. I am doing my final sessions today (Tuesday) and then we will pack ready for departure Wednesday morning," the tactician hinted. He added the flight is at 4 am.

The squad includes- Selina Okumu, Natalie Akinyi, Madina Okot, Rebecca Nkatha, Belinda Okoth, Rita Aluoch, Vilma Achieng, Linda Alando and Jemimah Omondi

 Other than KPA, Sporting Alexandria and Rwanda Patriotic Army (APR) are the other teams headed for the continental assignment from the region.

Reigning champions Ferroviario de Maputo as well as compatriots Costa do Sol, and Inter Clube of Angola will lead the hunt for honours in the show.

The other teams are AS Ville Dakar (Senegal), Energie BBC (Benin), Overdose Up Station (Cameroon) ASB CNSS (DR Congo) and Inter Clube de Luanda (Angola).
