Kisii eye university league final, says Obungu

The team qualified to the quarters after Multi Media University failed to show up for their game at Moi University

After sailing to the quarter-finals of the Kuza Kizazi Varsity League without kicking the ball, Kisii University have set their eyes on the tournament final.

Kisii University were on Saturday awarded a 28-0 walkover after Multi Media University failed to show up at Moi University.

In other results, favourites University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine beat Kabarak University 25-7 while the Technical University of Mombasa saw off Meru University 22-10.

Hosts Moi University thrashed Cooperative University 35-0.

On Monday, Kisii University games tutor David Obungu said: “We were ready for them but we were disappointed when they failed to show up."

Kisii will play Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on Saturday at the Technical University of Mombasa.

In other quarter-final fixtures, the University of Eldoret Trojans will be up against Mean Machine with Egerton Wasps battling Catholic University Monks. The Hosts Technical University of Mombasa will entertain Moi University’s Arsonists.

“All the teams in the quarterfinals play in the Kenya Rugby Union leagues, except Kisii. However, we are not scared of any team. We head to Mombasa for nothing less than a win. Our target if to get to the final,” said Obungu.

The semi-finals will be played at Multi Media University on November 26 and the final will be staged at University of Nairobi on December 3. The tournament has so far visited JKUAT, Catholic University of East Africa, Maseno, Egerton and Moi University.  

Obungu said plans are afoot to register the team in the KRU Nationwide League.

“We have a young and talented team. If we register them in the KRU Nationwide League, they will get exposure,” noted Obungu, adding that their football, hockey and volleyball teams will also be registered with the relevant national bodies.
