Kenya Handball Federation have partnered with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya to host the Zone V International Handball Federation trophy between October 24 and 30.

The tournament to be held at Nyayo National Stadium and Ulinzi sports complex at Lang'ata barracks will accommodate 20 teams from 10 countries.

Winners will have the chance to participate at the continental level and then proceed to the World Championships.

KHF technical director Charles Omondi said he is focused on developing young talent, whom he said will have their chance to represent Kenya at the tournament.

He said players from the just concluded secondary school games and those in the national league will be considered.

“This is meant for more of the development of the young players and not competition. The IHF has taken measures to ensure that this is purely to nurture talent rather than bring older players to participate in the tournament,” said Omondi.

The tournament will also involve the training of coaches whose teams will be represented in the competition. The instructor will be IHF lecturer Zaltron Marczinker.

"As we have stated before, hosting international events is the way to go. When we do that, we are able to create more opportunities for our athletes, coaches and generally the sports fraternity in terms of technical requirements," NOC-K secretary general Francis Mutuku said.

Mutuku urged other federations to bid for such competitions promising to support them whenever funds are available.

While applauding KHF for their keenness on youth development, Mutuku said: "Our promise to federations is that as long as they are doing a good job and the resources are available, we will always support them."

The partnership will see NOC-K hand KHF Sh1.5 million to be utilised in executing the tournament.
