Rosehilda Asumwa and Cynthia Cheruto will spearhead Kenya's charge at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-18 tournament starting this weekend at the Nairobi Club.

Both players will be using the tournament to prepare for the Women's Futures tournament set for November 14-28 at the Karen Club.

Asumwa said she is delighted and looking forward to the tournament to gauge herself against the world's best at the event.

" It's an event I am looking forward to, as I seek to gauge my strength and be in good form and competitive for the Women's Futures tournament,” she added.

Asumwa, who is a twin sister to Wimbledon doubles junior champion Angela Okutoyi, has had an inconsistent season but has vowed to finish the year on a high.

"It's been up and down this year but I am refreshed from the break I have had for the last two months and training has gone well. I  want to be in peak condition by the time we play the Women's Futures tournament," she noted.

She said it will be an honour to play with her sister at the event at the Karen. "Angela has done the country proud in the junior Grand Slam tournament and her playing at home will be big and playing with her will be great,” she noted.

Tennis Kenya administrator Nancy Nduku said preparations for the event are almost complete. She added that the event will be followed by the ITF under-12 at the same venue.

“We want our girls to be well prepared for the women's tour and be in good shape for the event,” added Nduku.

Elsewhere, Seline Ahoya leads the Under- 12 and under team to the Africa Junior Championship which starts today in Maputo, Mozambique. Ahoya will have Nancy Kawira and Liya Gikunda for the company.

The team won the East Africa title in April in Tanzania and coach Veronica Osogo is upbeat about Team Kenya's chances.

"We have a good chance and the girls are motivated and hungry for success," she said.

Kenya will meet Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa in the week-long championship.
