The budding partnership between Eleanor Chebet and Grace Bwire in Blazers' new-look attack will make the record champions formidable, assistant coach Josephine Ataro has said.

New signing Bwire grabbed a double against Sliders in her first Kenya Hockey Union Premier League match while Chebet, who is in her second season with the nine-time African Cup of Club Champions, managed one in the 3-0 win.

Ataro said Bwire, 20, and Chebet, 21, have a lot to learn from the experienced duo of Barbara  Simiyu and all-time top scorer Jacquiline Mwangi, who is in the twilight of her career.

While Bwire score a hat trick against Uganda in a friendly match last year, Chebet was the runner-up top scorer in the 2019 season with seven goals.

The pair was part of the national hockey team to the African Cup of  Nations Championship in Ghana, in January as Kenya bagged bronze.

Ataro observed that the continental experience was vital for their development and more exposure will enable them to fix their weaknesses.

"Bwire and Chebet are still in the initial stages of their development but the early signs are promising," Ataro said.

"If their performance against Sliders was anything to go by, then we already have the perfect replacement for our experienced forwards. Mwangi is not fully out, so they will continue learning from the iconic forward."

She added: "They already look like they have been in the game longer. Their combination amazes me. They are the present and future of this historic club, alongside others."

Ataro wore the Blazers and national team colours for two decades before ditching the stick in 2017 to move into coaching.

Chebet said: "There's still a long way to go. We are only getting started but there's a lot to come from us."

Ataro said Blazers are working on short corners and attacking displays ahead of the Strathmore Scorpions match next weekend.
