YouTube has ended the experiment that locked out non-premium members from accessing the 4K resolution option.

The firm had barred regular users from accessing the option, claiming it was only doing some tests.

But this week, the firm made a U-turn and said it had “fully turned off” the experiment, opening up the option back to everyone.

It remains unclear how many people were restricted from choosing higher resolutions when they were testing.

Just two weeks ago, YouTube announced that it may make watching videos in 4K quality exclusive to premium subscribers.

This was according to users across Reddit and Twitter who noted that YouTube asked them to upgrade to premium to enjoy videos in 4K.

YouTube Premium is a monthly paid subscription that goes for Sh1,200.

Users of premium get to enjoy ad-free viewing, and video and song downloads for offline watching. Users can also play videos while using other apps.

It said that the user might have been a part of the company’s experiment to know better the feature preferences of Premium and non-Premium users.
