Human rights defender feted in Mombasa dinner

Sheikh Munir Mazrui one of the oldest human rights defender in Kenya was feted during a dinner at the Fort Jesus Monument on Saturday. The dinner was organised by Haki Africa in partnership with the Canadian High Commission.

Sheikh Munir Mazrui has been involved in key historical human rights movements including the Mageuzi Movement which was alleged to have tried overthrowing the government in 1980s and the Mwakenya Movement in the country.

He is a founding member of the Muslim for Human Rights, an NGO based in Mombasa and Haki Africa which he chairs to date. He is also a nephew to the late renown scholar Prof Ali Mazrui.

Fellow human rights defender and now Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, said an award dubbed ‘Sheikh Munir Mazrui Activism Award’ will be initiated to celebrate other outstanding human rights promoters.
