Nairobi county clinical officers

have threatened to go on strike from Thursday, February 28.

They are protesting lack of promotions and failure by the county to confirm those on probation.

The health workers led by their union's Nairobi branch secretary Tom Nyakaba are also demanding employment of more workers to meet the required 1:1,000 ratio.

Currently, the county has only 300 clinical officers out of which only 150 are offering health services.

The total number countywide stands at 6,000.

"This follows laxity, bureaucracy, incompetence, unprofessional, mediocrity, indolent and sluggard manner in which our employer(county public service board) has handled our grievances," Nyakaba said.

"We have been following these issues but our employer has been taking us in circles. Having exhausted all available possible avenues of resolving this matter, we have decided to down our tools," Nyakaba said.

According to the officers, AAR which was contracted by the county to offer health services have further sub contracted BLISS GVS, which they claim offers "substandard and pathetic services".

"We want that all clinical officers be given a comprehensive NHIF cover. Officers don't want to receive services from BLISSGVS as it uses our officers to make money without fair labour practices,' he added.

They have however noted that their issues do not touch on salaries and allowances hence the county government should not use the Salaries and Remuneration Commission as their scapegoat.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on last blamed SRC for rejecting the CBA signed between the county and its 13,000 workers in 2017.

Sonko said the county has the money to pay the striking workers but his hands are tied.
