Breastfeeding can be strenuous, especially if you are not wearing the perfect bra.

A perfect bra? One might ask, yes, it is okay for a breastfeeding mother to wear a bra even if she is breastfeeding, but finding the perfect one is key.

It is not unusual to change bra sizes within the first weeks of breastfeeding.

Finding a bra that fits now doesn’t mean that it will fit as you continue nursing.

The good news is, there are a ton of great nursing bras out there, with options from underwire, seamless, convertible etc.

Here are the key factors you should consider:

SUPPORT

Breasts filled with milk are fuller and heavier, so you will want more support than your regular bras.

This will save you from saggy breasts after the baby graduates from breastfeeding.

Make sure the straps are wider so that they don’t strain your back and cut your shoulders.

“An ill-fitting bra can affect your posture, your back will appear more bent, and you will have headaches all the time,” says Lisa Atieno, a mother of two.

COMFORT

This should be at the top of your nursing bra must-have list.

“I recommend stretchy bras, especially during the first four to six weeks after having your baby as your breast size will change.” Caroline Wanjiru a certified lactation consultant told the Star Fashion.

Caroline advised women to opt for softer fabrics with a back closure with four or more hooks, cushioned straps, wide, and a band that doesn’t go all the way to the back.

“Avoid very tight bras, and also having a pair of 2 milk pads in your bag will save you, smelling like milk or milk dripping from your tops,” She said.

COVERAGE

“I go for bras with molded cups to help disguise the nursing pads and nipples, especially mine are now larger than before,” Lisa said.

Cups that fully cover your breast are key, and it’s something you’ll appreciate six weeks postpartum.

EASE

Caroline advised mothers to go for bras with removable pads.

“This saves you the burden of carrying extra bras in your nursing bag and also avoid sleeping in Bra’s with underwires and avoid bras with clips for easy feeding, " Caroline says.

Shopping with these tips will save you from buying a million bras that disappoint.
