Day in the Life: Peter Njoroge

Evangelist, The Anglican Church, Mount Kenya South

After working as a driver for a number of years, Evangelist Njoroge finally found his passion in church. The 30-year-old married father of two boys has been an evangelist with the Anglican Church for six years and he has no intentions to quit. He is also a certified life coach.

Njoroge found his purpose in helping the young people and he is currently in charge of the Youth Church at his Parish. His ultimate goal is to bring young people closer to God and encourage them to find their purpose in life. And if the determination on his face is anything to go by, Peter cannot allow them to settle for less.

I wake up at 3am and pray for one hour and from 5am to 6am I work out to keep fit. After that I start preparing Bible readings, sermons and other items for the day until 7am after which I take a shower, dress up for work and have breakfast. My favourite is milk tea, toast bread and eggs.

I arrive at the office shortly after 8am. The first thing I do is personal devotion and later go for briefing from my boss. I attend to people who want to see me until midmorning.

At 10am, I have some tea and a snack and leave office to do pastoral work. Pastoral work entails attending to christians at their homes and at a personal level, praying for the sick, the bereaved, visiting the elderly and sharing the word of God with them.

I take a break at 1pm to have time to rest and eat lunch. My favourite meal is chicken stew, mukimo and vegetables. I also take time to read the newspaper to keep myself updated.

I continue with pastoral work until 3pm when I go back to the office. I take about 45 minutes to update events on my diary. I write down cases that need follow-up, mentorship, counselling or any other form of help.

However on Fridays it’s usually school visitation day until afternoon. I hold prayers with the students and share the word of God with them and I also motivate them.

At 4pm I attend fellowships and worship experiences until 6pm. Other times I teach catechism to those who would want to be confirmed as full members of the Anglican Church. I later go home after a day's work.

I arrive home at 6.30pm, take a shower and spend time catching up with family as I babysit my little son. We eat dinner at 8pm. I watch news and later read a book. I like reading biographies and motivational books. Sometimes we watch a movie together with my wife in the evening. I usually sleep at 10.30pm.

I do not work on Saturdays unless there is a church function. I mostly spend the whole morning at the library reading and attending classes for some short courses. If there is a social function in the afternoon, I attend and if not I go home.

Sunday is usually my busiest work day. I am usually in church by 6am. I lead morning devotion service in the morning and later attend the main services until afternoon. If there is any bereaved family in the church or the community I join them in mourning, share the word of God and pray for them.

I get home at 7pm, review the week that has just ended and prepare for the new week ahead. I retire to bed at 10pm after a thanksgiving prayer.
