Deputy President William Ruto has vowed to end the problem of squatters at the Coast.

This, he said, will enable residents to own land.

Ruto said just like the Jubilee government did in other parts of the country by setting aside one million acres for resettlement, Kenya Kwanza will factor in funds for a similar programme.

“Just like we did in the Rift Valley and other regions we are going to have funds for one million acres of land to subdivide to the residents,” he said in Likoni on Thursday.

“It cannot be possible that after 50 years since Independence we still have people without proper places to settle in.”

He cited the Waitiki land that the state bought from the owner, Evanson Jidraph Kamau, for Sh1 billion.

In 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta told those living on the controversial land to pay for title deeds.

He said the national government had used money from the Settlement Fund Trustee to buy the 780-acre farm and ought to be refunded.

The land was initially 930 acres but the owner had sold 150 acres.

The DP, who has intensified campaigns at the Coast, enumerated the Jubilee government’s achievements in the region and promised to deliver more.

He said during Jubilee's first term they tarmacked 150km of road and increased electricity connections from 130,000 to 390,000.

Ruto urged residents to vote for him and shun his rival, whom he said are selling fake promises that cannot materialise.

He said it was sad that their opponents have started moving around explaining how they intend to transfer port operations yet they cannot implement it now when in government.

“When they heard we have plans to bring the services to Mombasa they started running around selling you the same idea,” Ruto said.

He was accompanied by Governors Amason Kingi (Kilifi), Salim Mvurya (Kwale) and Alfred Mutua (Machakos), among other leaders and candidates from the region.
