In Summary
  • It is commendable that Kenyans have maintained peace throughout the highly charged campaign period and yesterday when they voted.

  • The IIEBC also deserves credit for ensuring most Kenyans were able to vote despite delays, and logistical and technological (Kiems kits) problems

Millions of Kenyans showed up at polling stations across the country to select the successor to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Voters also chose MPs, senators, county governors, local assembly members and woman representatives.

Some voters had a hard time going through long lists of candidates on the ballots in some areas

The vote follows an intense campaign dominated by debates about living costs, unemployment and corruption.

Kenyans, like others around the world, have been finding that their money is not going as far as it used to when it comes to buying the basics.

It is commendable that Kenyans have maintained peace throughout the highly charged campaign period and yesterday when they voted.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission also deserves credit for ensuring most Kenyans were able to vote despite delays, and logistical and technological (Kiems kits) problems in some areas.

Reports from different parts of the country suggested that turnout was low compared to previous elections.

Whatever the numbers, it is important that IEBC counts the votes quickly and announces the winners to avoid unnecessary tension.

The commission should also ensure the results are made public at the respective polling station, constituency tallying centres and county tallying centres as demanded by the law.
