Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan has been shot in an assassination attempt.

According to Sky News, Khan was shot on the leg.

The news outlet reported that Khan's supporters said a gunman opened fire while he was delivering a speech to supporters at a rally in Wazirabad.

Khan was rushed away from the scene.

His supporters said he had survived the assassination attempt.

Sky's Cordelia Lynch, who was at the scene, said a Sky News producer was standing close to Khan and saw the moment the politician was shot.

The former cricketer - who has been pushing for new elections after being ousted from power in April.

Large crowds had gathered to hear him speak when there was a "sudden commotion".
