Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the government to increase financial support to families displaced by floods to Sh100,000.

Last week, Ruto announced that each household affected by floods will receive Sh10,000 to secure alternative accommodation.

Speaking on Wednesday, Kalonzo said the opposition wants the government to immediately deploy all the necessary responses for mitigating the impact of the flooding.

Kalonzo said the government should assist the bereaved families and the internally displaced.

"We note that President William Ruto recently announced in Mathare that the households affected by the floods will each receive Sh10,000, with Sh1 billion already set aside, again this is a case of too little too late. For the families who have lost everything, such allocations are too little to start afresh," he said.

"We demand that the government increase the financial support to at least Sh100, 000 per family and immediately launch an emergency aid appeal for all the flood victims in Kenya."

Kalonzo said the Red Cross projects that the flood situation could need at least Sh7 billion.

He said the government is forcefully evicting people from the areas perceived to be flood-prone and riparian land.

Kalonzo said the government should evacuate people in a manner that respects human rights without causing further deaths.

"In light of the current tragedy, we demand that this regime adopt protective measures of early warnings and facilitation of relocation of communities in imminent risk of being affected by the floods and adhere to effective disaster management strategies," Kalonzo said.

According to Azimio, the government should provide emergency relief services including food, shelter, and medical care to meet the basic needs of all the displaced, evicted and affected.

Azimio also wants the government to deliver assistance in rebuilding homes and infrastructure destroyed by the floods, with an emphasis on sustainable development and disaster-resilient construction.

"Develop and strengthen infrastructure and systems that enhance the country's resilience to natural disasters and facilitate effective response mechanisms," he said.

Kalonzo also added that the state should fast-track policies and legislative frameworks that focus on comprehensive disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation measures and ensure active community involvement in these processes.

Azimio expressed its sadness about the increasing number of casualties of the raging floods.

Kalonzo said that as a coalition, they continue to mobilise resources to help in the mitigation of some of the adverse effects on livelihoods.
