The driver of an Easy Coach bus that caused the death of a student from Chavakali Boys High School has been charged in at a Kisumu court.

The accident occurred on April 1, 2024, at 9.40pm along the Kisumu-Kakamega road at Coptic roundabout.

George Onyango Riako who was arrested a day after the accident was charged with causing the death of one student and injuring nine others.

The vehicle was ferrying the students from Vihiga to Nairobi for the April holidays.

The charge sheet indicated that the suspect drove the motor vehicle that was carrying students of Chavakali Boys High School at a very high speed.

It said the manner he drove the vehicle was dangerous to public having regard to all circumstances including the nature, condition and use of the road and the amount of traffic at that time or reasonably expected to be on road.

He is said to have deliberately applied emergency breaks while approaching the Coptic roundabout thereby losing control of the vehicle and causing it to swerve on the left before landing on the same side of the bus and fatally injuring one.

While appearing before the Winam Law Courts Principal Magistrate DK Mtai, Riako denied the charges.

Mtai released him on Sh200,000 cash bail or a bond of Sh500,000.

He directed that the matter come up for mention on April 25, 2024.
