The National Transport and Safety Authority has urged drivers to ensure the safety of learners on the roads by adhering to traffic rules.

Learners across the country have started travelling home for the April holiday.

In a statement on the X platform on Friday, NTSA listed five key conditions that school transport must meet before embarking on ferrying students back home.

"As our children head home for the holidays,  remember, school transport like all Public Service Vehicles, must have valid Road Service Licence (RSL)," NTSA said in a statement on X Friday.

NTSA said school transport must also have a valid inspection certificate and the vehicle be fitted with a functional speed limiter.

"The driver must have the requisite Drivers License class endorsement and a valid PSV badge," NTSA said.

"We urge all schools to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations. Let us all ensure our children get home safely."

The guidelines come in the backdrop of cases of accidents involving school buses.

The recent one is that of Moi University where 12 students sustained minor injuries after after their bus was involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway at Kimende town in the Lari subcounty.

The bus was ferrying third-year and fourth-year Kiswahili students to Mombasa for an academic trip.

The driver of the bus is said to have lost control of the vehicle in unclear circumstances after which the bus landed in a ditch.

Last week, Kenyatta University lost 11 students in an accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

The accident came barely two weeks after 11 Kenyatta University students.

The accident occurred at Maungu, Voi, Taita Taveta county, along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The 11 were among a group of 58 others heading to Mombasa for an academic trip before their school bus collided with a trailer.
