Gunmen shoot and kill businessman in Garissa

Police are investigating an incident in which a businessman was shot and killed outside his shop in Bura East, Garissa County.

The businessman was shot at close range in the head and died on the spot in the March 13 incident.

The motive of the shooting of Denis Mawira Kiambi, 31 is suspected to be business rivalry, police said.

Police said the deceased was seated outside his shop in the Dar es Salaam area when three gunmen appeared at about 8 pm.

Without any provocation, one of the gunmen pulled the trigger hitting the man in the head and right ribs.

They shot him four times before disappearing towards the Dek Wardey Dam within the area.

Police visited the scene and recovered four empty cartridges of AK47 rifles.

The body was moved to the Garissa County Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

No arrest has been made so far and an investigation has been opened, police said.

Cases of hired gunmen being used to eliminate competition are common in the area, police say.

Meanwhile, there was drama in Obambo village, Siaya County when a group of suspected thugs fled on foot after abandoning a car they were using in a robbery mission.

The five suspects had attacked and robbed businessmen in the area on March 13 at night when an alarm was raised.

Three victims reported they were robbed of cash and valuables. The alarm alerted residents who chased the gang that was in a car.

Noticing danger as more residents were joining the chase, the group abandoned the car and fled on foot.

The car was found on the road with the engine running and later towed to the local police station.

Police said they are looking for the owner of the car to establish what transpired for it to be involved in the robbery incidents.

The area is facing a rise in crime in general amid calls for action to address the menace.

For instance, a police officer was attacked and killed by a mob and robbed of his gun in the Oyude area.

Police responded and arrested 16 suspects before recovering the pistol.

Police say they have deployed more personnel to the area to address the menace.
