Agriculture PS, Paul Ronoh on Wednesday assessed the distribution of the fertilisers at the National Cereal and Produce Board(NCPB) offices in Nandi County saying it was necessary to visit the depots to supervise the progress while ensuring each of the farmers will benefit.

“Today I visited Nandi county to check on the status of distribution of subsidised fertilisers at Lesos, Mosoriot, Kapkaren Selia National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots," Rono said.

The Principal Secretary also added that the distribution would take place in different phases in accordance with the planting season.

“Several counties benefited during the January- February planting season which were Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisii and Bungoma,” Rono said.

“During March, the North Rift region is expected to start the planting season  therefore we have distributed fertilisers to Nandi, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet counties ahead of time.”

The PS added that there will be the creation of last mile centres which will help in reducing the long queues expected.

"The last mile depots at Chepterit and Chepterowai opened will bring services closer to farmers and decongest depots and improve efficiency," the PS said.

"We are also  partnering with the county to add additional workforce and infrastructure to fast-track the distribution of fertilisers to farmers."

The PS said that each registered farmer will purchase the fertilisers through an e-voucher.

"Registered farmers in the country will get a bag of 50 kgs fertiliser at Sh2,500 via an e-voucher system at the nearest NCPB depots," Rono said.

There will be a continuous distribution of fertilisers across the country to enhance food production.

"The Ministry expects to increase distribution to 3 million fertilisers in the next three weeks for more coverage," the PS  said.

He also noted that as the government supplies fertilisers it will work to catch cartels involved in illegal sale of farm products.

"The government through a multi-agency team is closely monitoring the distribution of the fertilisers and crack down on unscrupulous traders who are illegally selling fertilisers and fake seeds," Rono said.

The NCPB officials advised the farmers to ensure that they have the right certified seed for their farms cautioning them that despite using fertilisers it might bear failed results if they use counterfeit seeds.
