Governors Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), Cecil Mbarire (Embu) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) have commended President William Ruto for his efforts to empower women.

Speaking in Embu, the three county bosses said Ruto has been supporting programmes and policies that seek to uplift the lives of women.

Ndeti noted that Ruto has assured women, during celebrations to mark International Women’s Day on Friday that the two-thirds gender rule will be implemented.

“That is one thing we want to thank you for. It is something we have been fighting for over many years,” she said.

The "not more than two-thirds Gender Principle"  hereinafter referred to as “the Gender Principle” in the Constitution of Kenya is designed to ensure that neither gender occupies more than two-thirds of seats in elective or appointive positions in public institutions.

In his address, Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the two-thirds gender rule is realised in the country.

The President said male legislators have also pledged to ensure a solution to the matter is found once and for all.

Ndeti said women need to be empowered in politics, business and education.

Mbarire said for the first time in the history of Kenya, women are playing pivotal roles in national and county programmes.

“I want to thank you, your Excellency, for seeing the efforts of Kenyan women and finding it necessary to support their programmes,” she said.

She said the Linda Mama programme should also be allowed to continue.

The Linda Mama free maternity program was introduced to protect the poor and vulnerable and improve the delivery of maternal services.

The initiative was launched in June 2013 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on pregnant women.

Mbarire said governors on their part will ensure health facilities have medicine and are well equipped

Waiguru said will seek to occupy 50 per cent of the seats of governors come the 2027 elections.
