The planned recruitment of 15,000 volunteer servicemen and women to join the National Youth Service (NYS) begins today across the country.

The exercise to be conducted at the subcounty will see each of the 1,450 wards get slots as per the distribution schedule released by the government.

The wards have been allocated between three to 33 slots based on the population.

Among the requirements are that one must be a Kenyan citizen and a resident of the respective subcounty of recruitment and must be aged 18 to 24 years.

They should also have a mean Grade of D plain and above in KCSE and they should produce original National Identity Card and academic certificates, copies of which should be availed at the recruitment centre.

Eligible candidates must also have a certificate of Good Conduct, must be ready to undergo medical check-ups during and after the recruitment, should be prepared to undergo rigorous physical training and should be prepared to give voluntary service to the country in any part of Kenya.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has challenged leaders and the public to monitor the ongoing exercise to ensure it is fair and transparent.

Kuria said having published the allocation of slots for each of the wards, it was now the responsibility of local leaders to supervise so that their people are guaranteed fairness.

“Dear all MCAs, MPs, Women Reps Senators, Governors, Media, Clergy, Professionals and Wananchi in general. It is up to you to monitor and ensure your wards get their rightful share,” he said.

“It is time to fix this country once and for all. The price of freedom is vigilance,” he said.

He said in the past, the process has had flaws and they are determined to fix it this time round to ensure every candidate has an equal opportunity.

Kuria has also affirmed that there will be no special list for recruitment and that everyone must go through the entire recruitment process.

He emphasized that the list of successful candidates will be posted in a public portal one hour after the closure of the exercise.

"No one will have a special list. Not the Director General, not myself as the Cabinet Secretary, not the President of the Republic of Kenya," he said.

"Kila mtu ang'ang'ane kwa uwanja. The only connection you need is an internet connection to read this message. All the youth in this country deserve an opportunity. President William Ruto and I will give this fair opportunity to all young people without fear or favour," he added.

President William Ruto has already directed the National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forestry Service to recruit 80 per cent of their pool from NYS.

"Majority of the recruits therefore stand a chance to be absorbed into these institutions following the completion of their training," said Kuria.
