Detectives from the Ethics and Anticorruption Commission (EACC) on Friday arrested a police officer for allegedly extorting Sh30,000 from a complainant.

The male officer was busted Friday at a liquor store along Lumumba.

EACC claimed the officer demanded the amount from the complainant to release two brothers he had arrested and locked in the cells since Thursday without booking them in the OB as required.

“The Commission received the complaint and conducted investigations leading to the officer's arrest after receiving the demanded amount,” the anti-graft agency said.

A Taurus revolver pistol and ammunition were confiscated and handed over to the OCS EACC police station.

During the arrest, a minor scuffle is said to have ensued with the officer wailing “uncontrollably” as he attempted to resist.

This was after the sleuths pounced and informed him that he was under arrest.

He is currently being detained at the Kilimani police station.

Officers aware of the matter said he is set for further processing at the EACC Integrity Centre police station today (Saturday).

The arrest of the cop comes in the wake of an increase in such cases of extortion amidst the runaway corruption in the police service.

The commission has since urged Kenyans to report it as it calls on police commanders to take up the responsibility of ensuring that officers under their command refrain from such acts which are not only criminal but also immoral.
