Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said he is sending teams across the country to investigate Junior Secondary Schools that are charging parents fees.

The CS said JSS ought to be free adding that no parent should pay even a shilling to have their learner in a JSS public institution.

Machogu said he gave a warning and a circular was released with instructions to County Directors of Education on JSS being free.

"I have constituted a team that will go around the country because there are a few con people who want to go against government directive that no fee should be charged at JSS level," the CS said.

He noted that the government released Sh7.6 billion for Junior Secondary Schools adding that Sh16 billion went to secondary schools while 4.7 billion went to primary schools.

"Kenyans, if there is anyone who will con you by charging you even a shilling, they will be sent home. I won't allow the President to fire me because of a few who don't want to do their work as instructed," Machogu said.

He said in the next two weeks, he will go around with his team in the 28,000 JSS schools to investigate institutions charging parents school fees.

"I assure you, in two weeks, I will personally go around the schools to ensure the directive by the government is adhered to in the whole country."

Further, Machogu said no parents should be forced to purchase new school uniforms for their JSS learners.

"If the parent is unable to buy a new uniform, the learner should continue using the uniform they had in Grade 6 till the time the parent will be able to buy a new uniform," Machogu said.

The CS spoke when he accompanied President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Nakuru County for the official commissioning of Gilgil Technical and Vocational College.

The leaders also launched the Jitume Laboratory in the institution. Twenty computers were installed in the facility.

The Sh60 million project was constructed by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with NG-CDF.
