DPP wants man in viral Port Victoria Hospital drama arrested

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed the arrest of a male suspect in the incident where healthcare workers at Port Victoria Hospital were harassed.

The DPP in a statement dated January 10 recommended that the male who was captured in the video in the company of the first suspect Lenny Vanesa Ogema be identified, apprehended and charged alongside the accused person who has already been charged.

Despite Ogema presenting herself to the police and later being presented in court, the man in the video remains unidentified and at large.

A video taken on December 31 and which attracted nationwide condemnation showed the man, accompanied by Ogema, harassing a nurse at Port Victoria Hospital in Busia.

Ogema was charged on Monday after surrendering to police on Sunday.

This is after those harassed and abused recorded their statements with the police over the same accusing Ogema and a male colleague of the claims.

“The ODPP has directed that a second suspect who was in the company of the accused person and was captured in the video be identified, apprehended and charged alongside the accused person already charged in court,” the statement read in part.

The DPP said upon receipt of the said video which disclosed information on the commission of several offences, the DPP directed the Inspector General of Police (IG) to investigate the incident.

On January 8 2024, the inquiry fie into the incident was submitted to the ODPP for perusal and analysis of the evidence to make the decision whether or not to prosecute.

The DPP said that upon perusal of the inquiry file and analysis of the evidence available, his office was satisfied that there was sufficient evidence to charge the suspect.

She was charged with assault, causing actual bodily harm, creating a disturbance, malicious damage to property and threat of injury to persons employed in the public service.

“The suspect was arraigned in court before Port Victoria Magistrate’s court on January 8 and charged with the above-mentioned offences,” the statement said.

She pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was released on a bond of Sh200,000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The DPP said the case filed in court will be mentioned on January 17 for further directions and hearing dates.
