Mombasa Woman Representative Zamzam Chimba Mohamed has poked holes into efforts being made by the national government to mitigate the adverse effects of the el-Niño rains.

Speaking out while offering condolences to families affected by the devastating downpour across the country, Mohamed called on the national government to collaborate with counties to effectively address the crisis.

Chimba said Mombasa has received inadequate response from the national government.

She emphasised that despite the drainage system being established in 1972 when the population stood at 250,000, its upgrade hasn't occurred in over half a century, now posing a significant challenge due to the increased population.

"The drainage system in Mombasa was established in 1972 when the population was 250,000. Now, it's a challenge to upgrade it due to the increased population; eviction isn't an option. We must focus on resolving this issue," remarked Chimba.

Chimba acknowledged Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir's efforts in redirecting funds from salaries to address urgent needs but stressed that the move was not sufficient to tackle the compounded problem.

"Our Governor made commendable efforts in managing the situation, and we must support him while seeking lasting solutions," she stated.

The County MP highlighted the tragic loss of seven lives within the county, urging immediate action.

Chimba accused the Executive of inertia in managing the escalating humanitarian crisis.

She demanded transparency regarding Sh10 billion allocated for mitigation.

She urged President William Ruto to get rid of corrupt individuals and engage competent professionals to better serve Kenyans.

“Perhaps William Ruto has a vision for this country, but he must rid himself of corrupt politicians and engage professionals to deliver for Kenyans,” she asserted.

The Cabinet on Monday indicated that a total of 38 out of the entire 47 counties are within the “alarm stage” in the wake of heavy rains across the country.

It said the most severely affected areas are in the North-Eastern, Eastern and Coast regions.

The Cabinet noted with regret that 76 Kenyans have died, while 35,000 households have been displaced.
