Woman arrested over death of 10-year-old son in Trans Nzoia

She beat up the boy and left him to sleep only for her to find him dead the following day

Police are holding a 25-year-old mother over the death of her 10-year-old son after she allegedly beat her.

The death happened in the Pileland area in Trans Nzoi West Sub-county, police said.

The woman reported to Saboti police station on Saturday, October 28, 2023  morning, saying that she found her son dead when she woke up.

She told officers that the boy had earlier gone missing from home and when he returned, she beat him with a cane to induce some discipline to him.

 After the caning, the woman and her son proceeded to have supper and went to sleep.

However, when she woke up, the woman said she found him lying on the floor unresponsive.

Police visited the scene of the crime and moved the body to Kitale Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting a postmortem exercise.

This will determine the cause of death and action of the mother, police said.

Such tragedies where children die after a beating are on the rise. Officials urge caution among parents and guardians.

Meanwhile, Police in Gichagi II village in Ithanga Kakuzi, Murang'a County, are pursuing a 53-year-old woman over claims she beat her son to death following an altercation between the pair on the night of October 21, 2023.

Police say they are investigating murder in the incident.

According to police and locals, the incident happened after the deceased Naftaly Mumo, arrived home drunk on the fateful night.

The two fought leading to the death of the man.

The man was reportedly unable to move from the scene of the incident where neighbours found him unconscious the next morning.

He was rushed to Ngeleya Health Centre for treatment before being transferred to Murang'a Level V Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.   

A postmortem conducted on the deceased later revealed that he passed away due to internal bleeding resulting from blunt force trauma to the head, chest and back.

The deceased also had a fractured leg.

Ithanga Kakuzi Sub County police boss Patrick Nyaanga said they are looking for the woman for questioning.

 He said they want to understand what happened to lead to the fighting that turned tragic.
