Wetang'ula condoles with former Ghana President John Kufuor after wife's death

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula has penned a hearty condolence message to former Ghana president John Kufuor following the loss of his wife.

Wetangula who is attending the 66th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Accra, visited the former Ghanaian Head of State to condole with the family following the passing of his wife Theresa Kufuor.

In a statement posted in his X account, Wetangula expressed his condolences which was also on behalf of Kenyan President William Ruto, Kenyan Parliament, and Kenyans to Kufuor's family.

''May God rest the soul of the former Ghanaian First Lady in Eternal Peace,’’ Wetangula stated.

Furthermore, he expressed his happiness to see Kufuor in what he stated as being in good shape in his retirement and coming to terms with the big loss of a key member of the family.

Wetangula also reminded him (Kufuor) that Kenya has a lot of respect for him for saving the country from disintegration following the 2007/2008 post-election violence.

''I told him that his name will forever be in Kenyan history for his role in assembling a team of respected African leaders to broker peace when the country was tearing apart because of political differences and elections disputes, ''he said.

"I heard you are in Accra but I did not know that you would come to my home to condole with my family. We are so grateful as a family," said the former Head of State, Kufuor.

"Please pass my warm greetings to President William Ruto when you get back."

Jomvi Member of Parliament Badi Twalib and Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri alongside Kenyan Ambassador to Ghana Eliphas Barine accompanied him.

The former Ghanaian first lady passed on September 3, 2023, at the age of 87.

She served as First Lady from January 2001 to January 2009 and is remembered for her dedicated work in advancing maternal and child healthcare in Ghana.

Her advocacy efforts were pivotal in the introduction of a policy providing free childbirth care, which by a great margin reduced maternal and child mortality rates in Ghana.

She is said to have championed the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO’s) free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) program for nursery-age children in 2007.

Theresa Kufuor also supported various initiatives to promote education, women's empowerment, and social welfare.

Kufuor married her husband in 1962 and they had five children together.
