The Kenya National Highways Authority has issued guidelines on the speed bumps erected along the Southern Bypass after an accident along the road on Wednesday morning.

Deputy Director of the Corporate Communication Department, Samuel Kumba, offered their sincere condolences to the bereaved families and promised to support them through their grief while also wishing a quick recovery to those injured.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority regrets to report the occurrence of accidents, including this morning, on the Nairobi Southern Bypass," the statement reads in part.

The authority urged motorists to exercise caution during the ongoing maintenance works along the Southern Bypass.

These works include the surface dressing of the road, which is critical for sealing cracks that emerge as bitumen ages.

"Motorists are advised to pay attention to the signage installed along the road, warning of ongoing works and fresh, loose chippings," Bumba said.

"It is unfortunate that, despite the signage, a number of motorists do not comply with the speed limits.

"To slow down such motorists, the contractor has temporarily installed bumps made of quarry dust to safeguard the completed works."

He added that high speeds through fresh sections of chippings would lead to the loss of chippings, compromising the quality of the finished section.

"Besides, any attempts to brake a vehicle at high speeds would lead to skidding," Kumba explained.

He pointed out that it had been observed that motorists tend to speed along the Nairobi Southern Bypass.

To address this, a speed camera has been installed along the road to monitor traffic.

"We encourage motorists to adhere to the set speed limits on this road," concluded the statement.

An X user Mutinda Mutua had expressed frustration about the new bumps that were installed in an exercise that began on Tuesday.

"Whoever uses the Southern Bypass, be aware. Kenya's finest engineers decided to put bumps on the highway. Already today, there have been three accidents. Unfortunately fatal," Mutinda said.

"The bumps on the southern bypass are a death trap, catching motorists by surprise and we already have fatal accidents. What were the road engineers thinking? How soon will they be removed?"

In a rejoinder,  Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen responded that he had visited the place and would respond once done.

"I am on-site; I will revert," he stated via his X platform on Wednesday.
