The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has moved to court seeking to have a list of 4,734 persons supposed to be compensated as Lamu fishermen substituted.

EACC said the list of 4,734 persons has some ghosts claiming to be part of the Lamu fishermen that ought to be compensated.

"In the Application filed in Court, EACC is seeking to have the fraudulent list substituted with the validated list of genuine beneficiaries," the commission said.

EACC said following an inquiry into allegations of fraud in the Sh1.7 billion compensation for Lamu fishermen, it noted that the list had irregularities.

"Following completion of investigations, the Commission has moved to Court seeking orders to set aside the list of 4,734 persons earlier listed as beneficiaries, which investigations found to be marred with irregularities," the commission said.

EACC recognised that the Lamu fishermen ought to be compensated as their economic livelihoods were affected by the Lamu Port construction.

The commission said the probe identified genuine beneficiaries, ghost persons in the existing list as well as genuine fishermen who had been left out due to fraudulent practices.

"The ineligible persons who EACC wants to be removed from the list of beneficiaries were to be paid a cumulative total of Sh137,535,448.08," the commission said.

EACC envisages that after the genuine list is approved, all genuine beneficiaries will be paid.
