Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has confirmed that two people have died following suspected terror attacks along the Lamu-Witu Garsen Highway.

The attack happened around 7:40 am on Tuesday morning.

In a statement on Tuesday, the CS noted one person was killed during the attack while another succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

"Two of the victims of this attack had life-threatening injuries as a result of which one succumbed while being evacuated for emergency Intensive Care Unit treatment bringing the deaths to two," he said.

Kindiki said police officers responded swiftly to the attack and repulsed the terrorists who escaped into the nearby Boni forest.

"Security personnel from the Nyangoro forward operating base who were conducting clearance patrols along the highway responded rapidly and an engagement with the approximately 60 terrorists ensued scattering them into the Boni Forest," he said.

He however noted that they are yet to determine the number of those that are missing.

Kindiki said those who had been injured during the attack were receiving treatment.

"While a combined security operation of elite contingents of the National Police Service and the Kenya Defence Forces is currently underway, treatment of the injured, as well as the search and rescue of missing civilians, is ongoing," the CS said.
