Former DCI director Joseph Kamau has said the police need to be properly trained on how to handle crowds.

In an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, he called on people to understand that police are also human and are afraid just like anybody else.

"The police must be properly trained on how to deal with crowds," Kamau said on Wednesday.

"A police officer is a human being, they are just as afraid as you are."

Kamau said that police need proper training in order to change tact on crowd management.

"They must understand crowd psychology in terms of what the crowd is and what it's composed of," he said.

The former DCI boss said that police training needs to focus more on an individual officer for effective service.

"We give the police all kinds of technology, vehicles and guns, but we are not training the individual. We need to concentrate on the individual police officer," he said.

This he said would make the police officers conscious of reality and prepare them to face danger.
