ICT docket receives Sh15.1bn in 2023-24 Budget

Ndung'u proposes an allocation of Sh600 million to fund government shared services

Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u has proposed Sh15.1 billion for the ICT sector in the 2023-24 Budget. 

This is a decrease from the 2022-23 Budget which allocated the docket Sh15.6 billion. 

Speaking in Parliament during the Budget reading on Thursday, the CS said the proposed amount will fund initiatives in the ministry. 

"The implementation of interventions in the ICT department will improve the economy by offering employment, good connectivity," he said.

"The Digital superhighway will play a critical role in enabling the government achieve the objectives of bottom-up economic transformational agenda."

Ndung'u proposed an allocation of Sh600 million to fund government-shared services. 

Sh4.8 billion, has been all0cated in the development of Konza Horizontal Infrastructure phase 1. This is a decrease from the Sh5.2 billion allocated in the 2022-23 Budget. 

Further, the CS proposed allocation of Sh1.2 billion for the Konza Data Centre and smart city facilities which has been reduced from Sh3.8 billion in the 2022-23 Budget. 

For the construction of the Konza Complex phase 1b, Ndung'u proposed an allocation of Sh475 million. 

Notable, Sh5.7 billion has been proposed for the allocation of construction of the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technologies at the Konza Technopolis. 

For the maintenance and rehabilitation of the National Optic Fibre backbone phase 2 expansion cable, the CS has proposed an allocation of Sh1.3 billion. 

Additionally, for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Last Mile county connectivity network, Sh583 million has been allocated. This is decrease, down from Sh2.7 billion allocated in 2022-23 Budget.
