Atheists In Kenya Society(AIK) on Wednesday called out the government for holding the National Prayer Breakfast.

In a statement to newsrooms, AIK president Harrison Mumia expressed their displeasure with the National Prayer Breakfast event saying it is "a waste of state resources".

"The National Prayer Breakfast is a waste of taxpayers' money and an insult to Kenyans who are struggling with a high cost of living and unemployment," Mumia said.

He said that coming to power, the Kenya Kwanza government has failed to honour the promise on creation of jobs and tackling the high cost of living.

"Almost a year since the William Ruto administration came to power, millions of Kenyans remain unemployed or underemployed," he said.

"The cost of basic commodities is still unaffordable for many Kenyans"

Mumia added that Kenyans are not interested in the prayer breakfast and that the money used to plan the event should be channelled towards developmental projects.

"The Kenya Kwanza government should get its priorities right. The National Prayer Breakfast should be abolished"

The National Prayer Breakfast is held once a year.

It aims at uniting the country by bringing together leaders from diverse sectors of society.

It also seeks to foster an inclusive environment where leaders can unite in prayer for the nation's welfare.

This year's event was held on Wednesday at Safari Park, Nairobi.

President William Ruto on the said date graced his first National Prayer Breakfast meeting that is organised by Parliament.

Leaders across the country were in attendance including First Lady Rachael Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Second Lady Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, Wetang'ula and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah, among others.
