Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said leaders who do not contribute to various Harambees should be taxed the Housing levy.

Speaking in Kitui when he attended the fund drive for St Charles Lwanga, the DP expressed his disappointment on how the leaders from the region were not present during the event.

"These leaders should come to this school and contribute towards its development, they have let people from other places be here,  we are here, and they have salaries, it's sad they have been leaders for so long and this school looks like this," he said.

"Afadhali wakatwe hio 3 per cent, kwa sababu hawataki kutoa pesa zao kwa harambee, wakiambiwa watoe pesa kwa hiari yao, hawataki kutoa."

(It is better for the leaders to contribute 3 per cent towards Affordable Housing because they don't want to contribute to Harambees. When they are asked to contribute voluntarily, they don't want)

The Finance Bill 2023 which proposed 3 per cent to be contributed towards the  Housing Levy has received bash lash from leaders and Kenyans at large.

President William Ruto had in May announced that the contribution of the levy will be mandatory, clarifying it is not a tax.

"The shillings contributed will become, thousand and millions and will be used to construct affordable housing across the country," he said.

The head of state also said that the government has waived tax on all equipment and commodities that will be used in affordable housing.

"All the products including windows, doors, and hinges have been standardised to be produced in masses," he said.
