Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu has said he is ready to support the controversial Finance Bill, 2023 if the proposed housing levy is dropped.

Speaking at Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Kitui, the MP said the proposed Bill will cost elected lawmakers their seats if they back it in its current form.

The MP said since his election as MP, he has never seen a controversial Finance Bill like the 2023 one that has been proposed by the Kenya Kwanza government.

The MP said that the money belongs to taxpayers and therefore they must have a say on how they will be taxed.

''Please re-look at the increase of VAT from 8 per cent to 1 per cent and the housing levy and I will have no problem with the bill,'' the MP said

''Can we make sure that we get the houses without hurting our people. If it is not addressed some of us will vote a big a no.''

The MP, who spoke in the presence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was attending a fundraiser at the school, said it was unfortunate that the bill is being pushed on Kenyans.

''For the last 11 years I have been in Parliament, I have never seen a bill that is seriously opposed like this one, let us sit down on a round table and agree,'' he said.

The MP said that while the Ukambani region did not vote overwhelmingly for the government, they pay taxes like other Kenyans and must therefore be heard on taxation measures.

''We are paying taxes and if it is passed we will continue paying taxes, we must get it right,'' he said.

''We want flexibility on matters finance so that when you see something hurtful to the people you drop it.''

The MP, an economist, said through his experience, he knows that there is no country that can succeed by taxing her people beyond ability to pay.
