Mama Rachel mourns death of Mama Mukami Kimathi

First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto has condoled the family of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi following the death of Mama Mukami Kimathi.

Mukami, Kimathi's widow, passed on Friday morning aged 96.

Mama Rachel mourned Mukami as a legendary Mau Mau heroine and freedom fighter.

"She fought bravely alongside her husband, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, against the colonial oppressors and showed a selfless and compassionate love for her country," Mama Rachel said. 

She said the country mourns Mukami's passing and celebrates her life as a true icon of Kenyan history. 

The First Lady said Mukami was not only a fighter but also a nurturer and a symbol of hope for those who suffered under colonial rule.

Mama Rachel referred to her as the mother of the liberation movement adding that she played a pivotal role in shaping the course of Kenyan history.

" Her unwavering commitment to freedom, justice, and equality has left an indelible mark on our nation," Mama Rachel said. 

" We are forever grateful for her bravery and courage and for the sacrifices she made to ensure that future generations of Kenyans can live in a free and just society. May she rest in eternal peace."

Jubilee party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni also mourned Mukami describing her as an icon.

"Her legacy speaks of a powerful force in Kenya's Liberation from poverty, restoration of dignity and the democratic resilience we continue to enjoy as a Nation," Kioni said. 

Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua said Mukami remained true to the cause throughout her life.

"Kenya has lost a great patriot and a Matriarch of the Kimathi Family," Karua said. 

She said the country let Mukami down by not finding Dedan Kimathi's remains in order to accord him a decent send-off. 

"For that, we seek your forgiveness rest in peace mama Mukami Kimathi," Karua said. 

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said Mukami's passing reminds the Kenyans of their fallibility and the need to leave a mark on earth even in the most difficult circumstances.

"Mama Mukami and her heroic exploits during Kenya’s darkest moment will remain forever part of our Country’s painful history of colonialism," the CS said.
