Ruto to host visiting Japan PM Fumio at Statehouse

The two will hold talks aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.

President William Ruto will today host Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio at Statehouse.

The two will hold talks aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations.

Fumio arrived in the country Tuesday evening where he was received by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua.

Kenya's visit is the third in his itinerary to the African countries.

He has been to Egypt and Ghana.

"The PM will also be meeting with the Japanese business community, young volunteers and start-ups during his two-day official visit," Mutua said in a statement.

In Egypt, Fumio had a summit meeting with President El-Sisi where discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations and issues facing the international community, including the situation in Ukraine and Sudan.

In Ghana, he held a similar forum with President Akufo-Addo.

Their talks centred on areas of cooperation in health, food security and economy.

The relations between the two countries date back to post-independence.

Japan recognised Kenya soon after the country gained independence in 1963.

The Embassy of Japan in Nairobi was opened in 1964.

In 1979, Kenya's embassy in Japan was opened. 

Nairobi now hosts one of the largest Japanese expatriate communities in Africa.

Kenya's imports from Japan were ($892M) in 2021, according to the United Nations COMTRADE database on international trade. 

Vehicles, iron and steel, machinery, nuclear reactors and boilers, electrical equipment and rubber are some of the main products.

Kenya Imports from Japan - data, historical chart and statistics - was last updated in May 2023.

The main products exported from Kenya to Japan are Titanium ore ($18.1M) and coffee ($9.91M).

In the last 26 years, exports to Japan have increased at an annualized rate of 5.32 per cent from $22.8M in 1995 to $87.8M in 2021.
