On Friday, Murathe was at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to welcome Raila who landed back after a week-long sabbatical in Dubai.

Murathe's presence at JKIA and in Raila's convoy from the airport could signal Uhuru's approval of the street protests.

Jubilee secretary-general Jeremiah Kioni has been the only high-ranking party official who has been accompanying Raila in his rallies.

The developments also come hours after Uhuru stormed Jubilee party headquarters and vowed to fight hard to defend the party from takeover.

A faction allied to President William Ruto's camp is pushing to kick out Uhuru's confidants from the party.

On Wednesday, Murathe said his absence from the opposition protests has been deliberate.

Murathe, however, announced that beginning next week, he will fully participate in the protests.

He added that he will be at the JKIA to receive.

"The reason I'll be on the maandamano and I'll be in the airport to receive Raila Amollo Odinga is because these people are looking for an excuse. You see Murathe, you see Uhuru,'' he said in an interview with NTV.

"They have always been trying to link these Maandamanos to the former president. So, some of us have tried to deliberately not be out there though we are firmly in Azimio.''

The opposition had announced that it will start a fresh round of protests on Tuesday, May 2, 2023.
